Ghostriders in B-town

Known for following trends blindly; B-Town is in horror mode. Last year, Vikram Bhatt showed the way with Haunted 3D. The film was tacky; the 3D effects tackier.

Yet the scare-factor earned the movie 27 crore at the box office. A couple of months down the line, a little known film called Ghost with Shiney Ahuja raked in as much as 10 crore. That's all the genre needed. Suddenly, B-Town's faith in horror films has been reinforced. Now everyone - big and small - is attempting a horror-thriller; a horror-comedy or a horror-social.

Ram Gopal Varma, famous for Raat and Bhoot; quickly managed to whip up a script for the Bhoot sequel. In less than a month, RGV finished shooting the film on 3D and will release it in September. The film marks Manisha Koirala's comeback.Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt have Bipasha Basu and Emraan Hashmi in Vikram Bhatt's Raaz-3 (3D).

Vishal Bhardwaj is making Daayan with Konkana Sensharma and Emraan.Says a source, "The story is told from Emi's point of view and it talks of how Koko is seen as a witch (Daayan). This film is in 2D and will rely more on strong story-telling than special effects.

Producer-distributor N R Pachisia says, "The horror genre in 2D and 3D is likely to grow. At least two superstars are currently reading horror-film scripts and are even considering producing it themselves. Interest has obviously increased because of the box office numbers Haunted and Ghost brought in."

Pachisia adds, "In Hollywood, horror has a special place. Several big names have lent their presence to these films without hesitation.''A trade analyst though is slightly sceptical about how long horror in Bollywood will work. He says, "In Hindi, horror will only give returns if the budget is controlled. This genre has a limited appeal. Suspense thrillers have an appeal. However when it comes to pure horror; the more established names prefer to stay away.'
